Meet Your Hosts
Jane Hurl
This whole wagon train/trail ride came into being because Jane Hurl got breast cancer in January of 2006. As she likes to point out, "Breast cancer is not what a girl would do for a picnic", but it looks like she's got it licked (at least so far, so good) and now she wants to give back to the medical system that took such good care of her then, and continues to do so now.
She wants a cure in the near future so that women who are diagnosed with breast cancer don't have to live with the cloud of, "Will it come back?" Never one to think small, after that, she wants a vaccine so that her future granddaughters will never know the fear of this gawd-awful disease.
This ride is her dream.
Rusty Hurl
The hardest working person on this ride is Rusty Hurl, our event manager (and Jane’s son). It is on his shoulders that everything rides. From finding sponsors to talking to printers to making you feel welcome -- that’s Rusty.
In the summer of 2009, Jane had an accident with the driving team, breaking her back in 5 places, her right hip in 3 places and her left leg. She spent the entire ride (and then some) in the hospital. Because of these injuries, in the summer of 2010, she drove the team, but not for long hours. Because he had to, Rusty learned to drive the team and did the lion's share of the driving. (And he's allergic to horses!)
In 2012, the plan is to have Jane on the lines and Rusty in a truck being the Sheriff (the guy who keeps the peace in camp) and all 'round Gunslinger (the guy who fixes problems).
It's going to be legendary ... again!
